Same-Day Emergency Dental Care When You Need It Most

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Taking the right action before you arrive at our office may improve the outcome of your treatment.

Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss around the tooth to remove debris. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently and try to place it back into the socket if possible. If not, keep it in milk and contact us immediately.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces if possible.

Swelling or Infection

Facial swelling or signs of infection should never be ignored. Dental infections can spread quickly and may become serious without treatment.

Should I Go to the ER or an Emergency Dentist?

Many dental emergencies are best treated by a dentist rather than a hospital emergency room. An emergency dentist has the specialized equipment and training needed to diagnose and treat tooth pain, infections, damaged teeth, and dental trauma.

However, you should seek immediate medical attention or call 911 if you experience:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Severe facial trauma
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Suspected broken jaw

For most toothaches, broken teeth, lost fillings, and oral infections, Meadow Creek Family Dentistry can provide the care you need quickly and effectively.

About Dental Emergencies

  • What should I do in a dental emergency?

The first thing you’ll want to do if you find yourself or someone in your family experiencing a dental emergency is call our office right away. This allows our team to offer advice and determine whether or not we need to see you right away or if an appointment can be made at a later date. If we decide that the best course of action is for you to visit our office, we will clear a spot for you in our schedule and begin preparing a treatment room for your arrival so we can be ready to help right away.

  • What are some common types of dental emergencies?

It’s not always clear whether or not an injury or affliction is truly an emergency, which is why we always recommend calling first. However, there are a few common types of dental emergencies that almost always require immediate or same-day dental care. These include:

    • Unrelenting tooth or mouth pain
    • Uncontrollable bleeding and/or swelling
    • Cracked, broken, or knocked-out tooth
    • Lost dental restoration
    • Foreign object lodged between teeth
    • Abscess
  • Should I go to the ER or the dentist?

In many cases, patients will assume that the best thing to do is visit the closest urgent care or emergency room for treatment. If the problem is tooth, gum, or jaw-related however, the emergency room may not be able to do much except offer painkillers and refer you to an emergency dentist. Dental practices that offer emergency care have the tools and expertise required to do things like reattach knocked out teeth and perform emergency root canals, areas that emergency room doctors typically have no knowledge or experience in. Should you find yourself in a situation that requires emergency dental care, our team will be happy to assist.

  • Can I get a same-day emergency dental appointment?

We do our best to accommodate same-day emergency appointments whenever possible. Contact our office as soon as you experience symptoms.

  • What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

Handle the tooth carefully by the crown, keep it moist, and contact our office immediately. Fast treatment improves the chances of saving the tooth.

  • Can you treat new patients for dental emergencies?

Yes. We welcome both new and existing patients who need emergency dental care at our office in Inman.

  • Do you offer emergency tooth extractions?

Yes. If a tooth cannot be repaired or restored, emergency extraction may be recommended to protect your oral health and relieve pain.
