Why do I need a crown?
Dental crowns are one of the most important restorations we use at Meadow Creek Family Dentistry. Think of a crown as a “helmet” that’s custom-crafted to protect a compromised tooth from fracture and provide a way to build up the tooth esthetically.
The procedure for placing a dental crown hasn’t changed much over the decades, but updated tools and materials have vastly improved the final result. Now we can produce full zirconia crowns that are very durable and blend perfectly with surrounding teeth.
Once we decide that a dental crown is the right solution for you, we’ll slightly alter the shape of your natural tooth. This allows us to create enough room for the crown to sit naturally with other teeth and at the gum line.
Next, we’ll take an impression of the altered tooth. This impression is used to create a mold that will be sent to our dental lab where your customized crown is created. Before you leave our office, you will be fitted with a temporary crown.
In about two weeks, you’ll return to our office for placement of the crown. Our doctors will check the crown before cementing it in place. This step ensures that everything about the look and fit of your new restoration is up to our high standards. Finally, we’ll use a special cement to bond the crown securely to your natural tooth.
We would be happy to answer any questions you have or arrange a consultation to decide if a crown’s right for you. Please give us a call!
