Will Teeth Hurt After Whitening?

It’s amazing how a few shades of difference, either darker or brighter, can completely change how your smile looks. We’ve seen many times how a patient comes in for professional teeth whitening and walks out our doors with a renewed sense of self-confidence!

While teeth whitening is something to feel excited about, we understand that many patients feel worried about whether their teeth will hurt after the treatment, and if so, how long they’ll hurt for.

Is Teeth Whitening Painful?

Professional teeth whitening applied properly should only result in mild sensitivity. In contrast, a DIY treatment found online can wind up causing discomfort and damage to your enamel and gums. This is because they usually include unsafe ingredients or encourage excessive exposure to whitening agents. Generally, these homemade concoctions are not properly vetted by a dental professional.

Whitening & Tooth Sensitivity

Because professional teeth whitening involves powerful bleaching agents that deeply penetrate the different layers of your teeth to remove stains, it can leave those teeth feeling a bit more sensitive than normal. You might notice a twinge of discomfort if you go to drink something particularly cold or something very hot.

That being said, the sensitivity from a professional treatment will be mild and temporary. If experienced, it really should only last for a day or two. One reason to have a dentist whiten your teeth rather than trying to do it on your own is because they can actually minimize any sensitivity from occurring in the first place.
