What Is TMJ?
You’re probably wondering, “What is this confusing acronym?” Well, it represents an important joint in your face called the temporomandibular joint. The interchangeable acronym TMD simply stands for temporomandibular joint disorder. When aggravated or inflamed, this joint can cause intense pain in the jaw and surrounding muscles, and that can often present as severe headaches.
What Causes TMD?
The cause of TMD is inflammation in that joint, but the cause of the irritation to the joint itself is not always apparent. Some reasons for TMD include trauma to the area or arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. It can even be caused by bruxism, which is the technical term for clenching and grinding your teeth.
