Cosmetic Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored composite fillings (also referred to as composites) are an excellent choice for restoring a cavity. The material is bonded directly to the existing structure of the tooth, a process that preserves healthy tooth structure and provides a strong, durable repair. It’s almost always in our patients’ best interests to protect natural tooth structure to maintain a whole and healthy smile for many years.

Another important benefit of using tooth-colored composites is that the material can be shaded to closely match the color of your own teeth. This allows us to create a customized restoration that’s indistinguishable from the rest of the tooth

Why You Need Fillings

A filling is needed when bacteria attack healthy tooth structure, creating a cavity. Without a dental filling, the cavity continues to grow and eat away at your tooth. The decay will continue to spread and will eventually cause toothaches and possible infection.

Unfortunately, you may have tooth decay and not be aware it exists. In many cases, you won’t feel any sensitivity or discomfort until decay makes its way through to the deeper layer of tooth structure. However, state-of-the-art digital x-rays are invaluable for catching decay at its earliest stages. These highly detailed images allow us to detect and treat small cavities before they ever become a problem.

Conservative, Affordable Dental Bonding

Since composite material looks so natural, we can also use it for a process called dental bonding. Our doctors carefully shape the color-matched material to fit the contours of your tooth perfectly. For this reason, composite dental fillings are usually used in teeth that are most visible.

Dental bonding is affordable and conservative and can be used for:

  • Restoring chipped or cracked teeth
  • Covering teeth that are severely stained or discolored
  • Filling uneven gaps and spacing between teeth
  • Altering the shape of poorly proportioned teeth

There is very little preparation required for bonding, so the procedure is very efficient. In fact, bonding is so straightforward that we can often repair several teeth during a single appointment. Once we're happy with the appearance of the restoration, we'll polish the tooth so that it blends perfectly with the surrounding teeth. The result is a repair that looks so natural even you may have trouble spotting it!
